Ever since I saw this product last year I have been wanting to mess with it, after all, the interface looked so good and fun to use. Boy was I right. The interface is great, and the software behind it is even better. First off, the name implies the use and function of this product, a library. The concept; scan or enter a book, movie, game, or CD into the computer (using an iSight or similar digital video camera) to keep track of the ones you have and who is borrowing them.

I don't have a lot of friends, but I do have a lot of books. So the software wasn't really useful in both ways. However, it helped me organize my media and make sure I didn't buy a book I already had, which has happened before. Image not in archive — SS4.jpgAfter importing all my items via my pseudo barcode scanner I rearranged my books and movies into alphabetical order so I could better access them later, it seems as if it has really brought out my OCD.

With good comes bad, and Library is no exception. The quirk; barcode scanning. It worked most of the time, but with some books it either took a long time to get it scanned or I had to enter the title. That said, when it works it is rather addictive. I sat at my computer for hours scanning in books, when I was done I deleted some from the library just so I could scan them again. As if I have not bashed a great piece of software enough, there's more. Sometimes when scanning a book it would import a totally different book into my title. For example when I tried to scan "Scary Stories", it showed up as a book about the Philippines. However, this isn't that big of a deal. The remedy is easy; manually searching by the title or UPC code. I am not to upset about these problems, I can't expect everything to be perfect. Okay, I'm done, no more negative, let's move back to the positive side of things.

Not only do I love the barcode scanning feature, but the way the app represents the books is brilliant. The media is sitting on wooden shelves in alphabetical order. Another freature that I have not used much but would if I had more time, would be the similar tab. Under the individual description, the similar tab brings up a list of books that are pertinent to the topic of the book you have. It was fun to see what books I might be interested in. We'll see, someday I might take the computer's opinion.

As I said before I don't have many friends, so the main feature of the software is rendered somewhat useless. For this review I made a new friend named Apple Computer that borrowed some of my books for a day. All you have to do to loan an item in your library to a friend is drag the cover from the shelves to the person's address book entry. The software does the rest, it marks the book as "out" by labeling the cover. It automatically sets the due date for a week after the book is borrowed, but it can be easily changed by clicking on a new date. My favorite part is, when the book is not returned on time, a red stripe is put across the cover that labels the book as late. I might just have to fine my friends for not returning the item on time.

Overall this software is excellent, despite the few quirks. If you have a lot of books, a lot of free-loading friends, and forty dollars sitting around, this is for you. To really use the software to its fullest potential, and you don't have an iSight or DVC, I would suggest you get the Barcode Scanner sold by Delicious Library, it is $179 andonly uses a bluetooth interface, but can scan items from a shelf in the next room with a fifty foot range. And if your just love the beep the scanner makes when you scan an item feel free to visit your library, free of your computer, and scan away; the scanner can store up to 500 and when you are close to your computer the entries are automatically synced with your Delicious Library. Good Job Delicious-Monster, now roll out some more great software.Image not in archive — tn_SS2.jpg
