In Brief: Major Studios Unlikely to Join iTunes Movie Store, Biggest Event in Recent History Expected

Event Expected to be a "Blockbuster"

It is being reported that today's media event to be held at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco will be the largest in recent years from Apple. The event is being dubbed a "blockbuster".

It is expected that the event will be available via a delayed stream on Apple's website later in the day.

Media attendance to the Yerba Buena the live stream is said to extremely limited with only select members of the media being invited.

Major Studios to Pass on iTunes Movie Downloads

Think Secret is reporting that major movie studios are expected to be missing from Apple's announcement which will be made later today.

It is widely expected that Apple will today announce Movie downloads available via iTunes or something similar.

In similar fashion to the launch of the iTunes Music Store, it is expected that major pillars in the movie industry are going to be missing from Apple's plans with Apple hoping that success for smaller studios will entice the larger.

All this is with the exception of Disney who is almost guaranteed to be featured, due to Steve Jobs holding a powerful position on the Disney board of directors.

Final View on Apple Media Event

With Apple's media event less than 13 hours away the excitement is beginning to build amongst the Mac web.

In particular the rumours are focused in three key areas;

  • Feature length movie download service
  • New iPods - possibly to help boost sales of movies, but certainly to help maintain the iPod sales momentum
  • Streaming device - fitting in to Apple's home theatre dream. Reports point towards Airport Express like product but featuring video streaming.
