The Digitimes reports that Apple and several other computer notebook manufacturers are expected to launch notebook's using LEDs as the source of backlighting.
"Taiwan-based LED makers will not likely earn orders from such major brands, as notebook makers have high requirements for their product specifications – a brightness of over 1,680 nits – and Taiwan-based makers have yet to offer such a brightness level, the sources said. Makers such as Nichia and Cree will be the most likely candidates for orders of the backlight sources, the sources added," writes the Digitimes.
Currently most notebook LCD screens use a mercury backlight, the article implies that Apple could be planning to use LEDs as an alternative to the current method.
The advantages of using LEDs over a mercury backlight are significant with LEDs being easier to dispose of, have a longer operating life and have lower power draw whilst retaining bright light levels.
