Mac and iPod Sales Slump in January

New NPD data released earlier this week shows that Apple had a slow month in January. According to the data Mac unit sales were down 6% while iPod sales dropped 14% compared with January 2008.

A followup report by Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster this data is worse than the Streets estimations which were Mac sales to be off by only 4% and iPod sales off 11%. Despite this Munster saw the numbers as "a neutral or slight positive".

Munster also wrote in his note issued to clients on Tuesday that he expects Mac sales for Apple's second fiscal quarter to be between 2 and 2.2 million with iPod sales between 9 and 10 million.

The analyst kept a buy rating on Apple's shares with a price target of $180.
