Preview of Second Beta of iPhone OS 4.0

Yesterday Apple released the second beta of iPhone OS 4.0 alongside the SDK. By now World of Apple would have provided a screenshot walkthrough of what's changed in the OS. Unfortunately the ability for screenshots and images from the camera to go into the camera roll is not functioning (possibly by purpose). Below are some videos and photos of what's changed in the second beta.

iPhone OS 4.0 due out for the iPhone 3GS and iPod touch in the summer and iPad in fall carries over 100 new features and seven major features.

During the keynote presentation Apple demonstrated these seven major features:

  • Multitasking
  • App Folders
  • Enhanced Mail app
  • iBooks for iPhone and iPod touch
  • Enhanced enterprise features
  • Game Center
  • iAd

Apple also alluded to the following features:

  • File & delete Mail search results
  • Search SMS/MMS messages
  • Web search suggestions
  • Choose image size in Mail messages
  • Bluetooth keyboards
  • CalDav invitations
  • Larger fonts for Mail, SMS & alerts
  • Cell data only setting
  • Spell check
  • Persistent Wi-Fi
  • Gift Apps
  • Birthday calendar
  • Recent Web searches
  • Create Playlists
  • Sync IMAP notes
  • Top Hit in search
  • 5x digital zoom
  • Nested Playlists
  • CardDav

The second beta labelled build 8A248C carriers very few changes and is obviously still in the early stages of testing, notable changes are:

  • Music controls on the lock screen are back (double-press home button)
  • Visual changes in Game Center
  • New app switching animation when multitasking (video below)
  • Mailboxes in Mail now have icons
