To kick of today's 'Back to the Mac' special event Steve Jobs invited Apple chief operating officer Tim Cook on stage to give a quick update on how the Mac is doing.
During fiscal 2010 the Mac made up 33% of Apple's revenue last year or $22 billion. Cook put this in context and said that if Apple simply sold only Macs then it would be positioned 110th on the Fortune 500.
The Mac now also has 50 million users worldwide, 3 times more than it did five years. Last quarter the Mac install base increased by 2.5 times and has been outgrowing the market for 18 quarters in a row.
Cook also took some time to talk about development on the Mac mentioning that there are now 600,000 registered Mac developers and growing at a pace of 30,000 per month. Cook also briefly showed off some of the latest software triumphs that have come to the Mac including Valve, AutoDesk and Microsoft who continues to invest in the Mac with the upcoming Microsoft Office 2011.
Regarding Mac satisfaction Cook sampled some of the main players who take surveys of U.S. companies. The Mac has been number 1 in satisfaction charts from PCWorld, Consumer Reports and PC Magazine for years.
Finally Tim Cook spoke about Apple's retail efforts; last year Apple retail stores had 75 million visitors between them and told 2.8 million Macs, 50% of which were new to the Mac. Cook also noted that China's Apple retail stores are more trafficked than any other stores in the world.
