Notes of Interest From Q211 Conference Call

Today Apple held a live conference call with financial analysts to discuss the company's second fiscal quarter results for 2011 which it announced earlier.

Present during the call was Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer and COO Tim Cook who is currently taking on Apple's day to day operations whilst CEO Steve Jobs takes a medical leave of absence.

Notably events from the quarter running from December 26, 2010 until March 26, 2011 include:

  • Updated entire MacBook Pro family in March
  • Released developer preview of Mac OS X Lion
  • Began selling iPhones on Verizon in the US, SK Telecom in Korea and Saudi Telecom in Saudi Arabia
  • Introduced iOS 4.3
  • Launched Personal Setup service in retail stores

Below are some notes of interest from the conference call:

  • Product ASPs: $1400 per desktop Mac, $1300 per portable, $180 per iPod, $660 per iPhone, $600 per iPad
  • Ended quarter with 4-6 weeks of iPod channel inventory
  • iPod touch accounted for more than half of 9 million iPod sales
  • iTunes store revenue almost $1.1 billion
  • iPhone on 186 carriers in 90 countries
  • Ended March quarter with 5.2 million iPhones in channel with a target of 4-6 weeks channel inventory
  • iPad channel inventory declined in the March quarter by 400,000, ending at 850,000 below target of 4-6 weeks.
  • 189 million cumulative iOS devices now sold
  • Apple retail stores approaching 10th anniversary on May 19, expecting 1 billionth customer very soon
  • Record 71.1 million visitors, compared to 47 million visitors in year ago quarter
  • 3.19 billion retail revenue, and increase of 90 percent.
  • Retail stores sold 797,000 Macs compared to 606,000 in year ago quarter
  • 323 stores open during quarter averaging $9.9 million in revenue
  • Planning to open 40 new stores in fiscal 2011, including fifth store in China
  • Personal Setup service helped set up over 1 million products in quarter.
  • Tax rate was 24.2 percent
  • Cash and short/long-term investments rests at $55.8 billion
  • Japan disaster, "Did not have any supply or cost impact in fiscal Q2, and do not anticipate any material supplier cost impact in Q3."
  • Situation in Japan remains unpredictable but Apple does not expect any impact in fiscal Q3
